Ubuntu

Ubuntu

Ubuntu is one of the most widely used Linux distributions worldwide and is developed and maintained by Canonical. Based on Debian, Ubuntu combines high user-friendliness with regular releases and a clear focus on cloud and server applications. Today, Ubuntu is the most widely used operating system on the majority of public cloud instances worldwide.

Regular Releases and Long Term Support

Ubuntu releases a new version every six months. A Long Term Support (LTS) version is released every two years, providing security and stability updates for five years – with extended support for up to ten years via Canonical’s Ubuntu Pro service. For enterprise environments, LTS versions are the preferred choice, as they offer planning security and a long, stable lifecycle.

The Preferred Platform in the Cloud

Ubuntu has established itself as the standard operating system in public cloud environments. AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and numerous other providers offer official Ubuntu images; many cloud-native services and reference architectures are based on Ubuntu. Ubuntu is also widely used in the container sector: Canonical maintains official base images for Docker and supports Kubernetes deployments with MicroK8s and Charmed Kubernetes.

Use Cases

  • Cloud Infrastructure – Most Popular Operating Systems on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, According to Their Own Data
  • Web and Application Servers – broad support from the software ecosystem and package sources
  • Containers and Kubernetes – proven basis for Docker and Kubernetes environments
  • Development Environments – widely used as a basis for CI/CD pipelines and developer workstations
  • IoT and Edge Computing – with Ubuntu Core for resource-constrained and embedded systems

Ecosystem and Community

Ubuntu benefits from one of the largest Linux communities worldwide, as well as the extensive Debian package base. With over 60,000 available packages, an active documentation community, and broad commercial support from Canonical, Ubuntu is one of the most well-documented and accessible Linux platforms available.
